RALEIGH, N.C. (February 1, 2012) – He may seem like your friendly neighborhood cardiologist and specialist in electrophysiology. But Dr. Kevin R. Campbell of WHV-Wake Heart & Vascular is known across the United States for presentations he gives to other physicians about preventing sudden cardiac death in women.
As part of the national Go Red For Women campaign this month, Campbell will deliver a lecture next week to about 50 OB-GYNs at a special event in Raleigh. The topic is “Prevention of Sudden Cardiac Death in Women: Serving the Underserved.”
Sudden cardiac death is the number one cause of death in women in the United States, yet women are underserved and undertreated for the disease compared to men with the same diagnoses. In part, that is due to the fact that cardiovascular disease is widely seen as an “older man’s” issue. Actually more women than men die of cardiovascular diseases every year in the U.S. – nearly 500,000 annually, according to the American Heart Association.
Go Red For Women is an 8-year-old effort by the association to raise awareness of the issue and to empower women to address their cardiovascular health.
Campbell delivers his symposium to doctors of various specialties. But he increasingly has focused on OB-GYNs because some women see only that specialist on a routine basis. Campbell helps educate OB-GYNs on how to screen women for cardiovascular disease.
“More women are being identified and referred,” he said recently. “We are making a real impact here.”
Women and men may share similar heart attacks symptoms, but women often present differently and may have vague symptoms such as fatigue, malaise or just feelings of anxiety. Such subtle signs are easy to miss, experts say.
Campbell practices in Raleigh, Smithfield and Wilson. He is one of more than 20 doctors who make up WHV-Wake Heart & Vascular, a noted cardiovascular practice that serves Wake County and Eastern North Carolina. Affiliated with UNC Health, WHV is the state’s largest independent cardiovascular practice. Its doctors are pioneers in a number of life-saving procedures.
Campbell’s evening presentation will be held Feb. 9. It is sponsored by St. Jude Medical, a maker of cardiovascular and other medical devices.
